Welcome to Blue class

At Banstead Infant School we teach children to be creative thinkers and believe that the teaching of science encourages children to develop a healthy curiosity about our world.  We believe that learning about science through first hand experience is key.  Science allows children to explore, raise questions and develop their reasoning skills whilst promoting a respect for living and non-living things.

In the Foundation Stage the children are given opportunities to observe, sort and classify and perform simple tests to help them begin to understand the world around them.

In Key Stage One the curriculum is split into different areas.  These include:

  • Working Scientifically
  • Plants
  • Animals, including humans
  • Living things and their habitats
  • Everyday materials and their uses
  • Seasonal changes

We use both our indoor and outdoor environment to support the teaching and learning of Science.  Reception children have daily access to our outdoor learning environment, which is regularly used to develop the children’s scientific skills and support their learning. We are also very fortunate to have our garden area, greenhouse and Woodland Walk.  All children at Banstead Infant School take part in gardening and Forest School enabling them to observe seasonal changes and develop their knowledge of plants, animals and their habitats.

Throughout our science curriculum we offer the opportunity for children to work scientifically.  We encourage children to be curious and ask and answer questions about the world around them.  We provide children with opportunities to make observations, use scientific equipment, perform tests and gather and record data to help answer questions and develop their reasoning skills.
