Welcome to our school. I would like to take this opportunity to tell you all about the exciting things taking place at Banstead Infant School. Our school is such a happy place to be – we have friendly, helpful staff and enthusiastic children. We had an Ofsted inspection in 2006, which graded our school as ‘outstanding’ in all areas. We are very proud of our achievements and our school. At Banstead Infant School we are developing a creative approach to our planning. We want the children to be emotionally involved with their learning. We are achieving this by: · Asking the children how they enjoy to learn best and feeding this into our planning · Linking subjects together to encourage deeper interest · Using the creative arts to bring topics to life · Using ICT to inspire and excite · Placing an emphasis on speaking and listening Our end of Foundation Stage and SATs results are well above the Surrey average and actually put us in the top 5% of schools nationally. We really do aim to mix excellence and enjoyment at this school. We have an environment project in place. We are keen to develop the school grounds so that we can use them as an outdoor classroom. So far, we have built a children’s garden. Work has begun and we soon hope to have a village of houses, a circle of logs and a bird hide. Banstead Infant School has achieved 'Healthy Schools' status in 2008. We have nutritionally balanced school lunches and they are very tasty! The children have weekly special time where they learn to talk about their own feelings and the feelings of others. We have just started a school council so that we have even more opportunities to listen to the children. The children are given lots of opportunities for exercise – we do this through the three PE lessons each week combined with before and after school sports clubs. We are part of The North Downs ConFederation of schools- which is working towards offering extended services for children and parents. These services include: after school clubs, family learning and courses for adults, and before and after school child-care. The federation is also committed to offering in-school opportunities such as a musical festival and sporting tournaments. We arrange ‘Challenge Saturdays’ which aim to meet the talents and gifts of the children. Gill Harradine Headteacher
